What Meets Should I Attend?: This is a common question for first year swimmers. Most swim meets have time standards that a swimmer must achieve before they can be entered in a particular event. Some meets even have a de-qualifying time (no faster than) that the coaches have to adhere to when entering a swimmer. Meet classes fall into three categories:
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETS: These swim meets usually have no time standard and are done usually in three hours. They include dual or tri-meets. First year swimmers attend a lot of these to build their confidence and experience. Our club runs two of these a year.
INVITATIONAL: These kinds of swim meets make up the bulk of the competitive swim schedule. The usually have time standards for an athlete to qualify for ie. An BC “AA” time. Coaches use these swim meets as opportunities to test the athlete on what they have been focusing on in workout. Best to check with your coach as some times the goal may not be to get the best over all time.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS: These swim meets offer the best competition for a particular time standard. For example: Provincial AAA, Western Championships, Age Group Nationals. This is what the swimmer has been working towards all year long and should definitely attend.
